This song - written immediately after WWII and composed by Felix Ref Ren Konarski - rises to the level of the 2nd Polish National Anthem. A fact that was troublesome to the Communist Authorities who considered Mr Konarski to be a threat. As a consequence many young poles grew up hearing this song without knowing who composed it. All of Konarskis poems are full of pain and pathos, and without a doubt he is and should be considered as one of Polands greatest 20th century poets. They couldnt silence this song, because you cant ever silence the dead. I heard it also from my Grandfather - Marian Burakowskis lips, as did my mom Liliana Tademar, and one day my Grandfather had the great pleasure and honor to meet Mr Konarski himself here in Los Angeles when they both attended the same party - a semi-official gathering of Lwówians - as were many of the Polish men who died conquering Monte Cassino.
