This song written by Neil Young about racism, the KKK and slavery can be applied to any place at any time. Racism and a willingness to use violence is not limited to any geographic area. It is a sick thing in a persons heart and mind usually planted from a very young age by parents and encouraged by various other people and factors in a persons life. Violence wont cure it, hated wont cure it, but while we do work to cure it we need to make sure that any violence and any racism or anything counter to love and unity is called for what it is and justice is demanded. We see things happen like the cop shooting an unarmed young man in Missouri and we are sickened and we should be sickened. Turning from it wont stop it from happening again somewhere else and violence wont solve it either. But millions and millions of people speaking up continuously until there is accountability will protect people from it while we work to make sure all hearts are open, all minds are open and we dont have a system that not only allows wrong doing but encourages it. Remember...speaking up about a wrong today does not only address the wrong today, it also shows what society accepts, it shows children what we allow and what we dont allow...so speaking up today can keep a kid from heading down that hateful road years from now. Speaking up sows seeds of positive change that will grow tomorrow, not just today. A sick system is not something that develops in a vacuum, it happens by people not staying informed and not being vocal. Silence is the perfect fertilizer to grow injustice in.
