This sound recording takes you on a journey with me as we walk through the Medina of Menkes, Morocco in May of 1999. We start in an open plaza with a crowd at one end; we brush off the guides with a La shukran and pass through the crowd, taking the first right and walking down the narrow shaded street towards the heart of the Medina. It is cooler here and it feels good to be out of the hot sun. Passing shops blaring music, a beggar asks for a dirham while children play and maneuver between goats and mopeds. An old man with no legs, foaming at the mouth chants an incantation. Further on, the street opens up with birds singing in a cluster of a few small trees. We pass into a small tunnel, then exit and continue walking in search of a café for a place to sit and have a drink of mint tea.
