This sounds like the direction the movies should go, if they manage to pull it off. The first 10 minutes of Into Darkness, when theyre on that alien planet trying to stop that volcano, in my opinion hit all the right notes and was exactly the sort of thing I wanted to see in the new films. Trek is about crews exploring the final frontier, encountering alien cultures and strange phenomena, and by dealing with the challenges and dilemmas those things present, exploring their own humanity. If the next film has that at its core, and layers on enough special effects and explosions to have popular appeal, it could be a huge success as well as a great Trek film:
