This source tells of a dreadful injury Alexander the Great suffered not long before his death. Mary Renault certainly seems to think that he never really recovered from this wound. Reading about the surgery (with no antibiotics afterwards) it seems very likely. The army had already revolted at the time this injury was sustained and they were attacked on the way home ... Think I saw a documentary showing Alexander still bravely charging first into battle when his army had had enough. Still looking.
