This status from a rescue in China explains very clearly what shelters go through around the world. This clarifies how little the general public understands of the way that they can personally be helpful to an animal in need instead of just dumping them at a shelter with a group of mostly unpaid or very low paid, over-worked, and underfunded animal lovers who sacrifice a great deal to take care of the animals that the world has thrown away for various reasons. Rescuing an animal is the responsibility of those who care, not just the organizations who have neither the time nor the room (and especially the funds) to take them in. Controlling infectious disease in a shelter environment is extremely difficult and with the stress level of the dogs and cats, their immune response is lowered anyway. As Chris says here: JUST TRY!!! DISRUPT YOUR LIFE FOR A FEW DAYS OR WEEKS! MAKE AN INVESTMENT OF TIME/ENERGY. DO SOMETHING INCONVENIENT! This is animal rescue. Make the sacrifice. We have never regretted a second of the sacrifice we have made to our time, finances, and sanity here at VAWO. The animals are always worth the trouble. We are currently 100% full at the shelter and we cannot emphasize this enough. If we were better funded and staffed and if we had a vet that could even just sterilize an animal with any modicum of competence, this may not be the case, but as it stands now, please take in the animals you find yourself, consider fostering or adopting one at the VAWO shelters, and be the voice for animals everywhere you go, not just as you drop a kitten at our gate and feel like you have rescued something.
