This status from my friend MojMoj OmoAkin from Dec 4 needs to be posted again. To my Nigerian friends who believe that if you just pull up your pants and dress nicely and speak well, no one will bother you, let me ask you this: When that Oyinbo (white person) comes to your Naija wedding, and they have on the full aso-ebi, complete with the gele and ipele, do you suddenly go blind and forget theyre white? Like you dont see color anymore ehn? I mean sure, youll probably fawn over them for making an effort to dress appropriately, but do your prejudices all of a sudden go out the window? Your parents are not side-eyeing them abi? Are they now automatically accepted as your family because they just ate spicy Jollof rice? Ok, so please lets stop pretending like we live in some prejudice-free, racism-free world. We cant put a bandaid on a canker sore and hope it goes away. You fight so hard to get that American passport, but all of a sudden cannot fight for the liberty and justice of the people living in the country?! Its not your problem huh? YOU are the definition of African-American. You are not immune to racism because youre privileged to wine and dine with your white friends on the daily. So join the fight! And bring your Oyinbos with you!
