This still remains one of the most inspiring speeches of our recent times. It is Lieutenant General David Morrison, Chief of the Australian Defence Forces, calling out unacceptable behaviour in his troops. Im always struck by the sheer magnetism of this speech, directed straight to the camera without any bells and whistles. Lieutenant General David Morrison shows how simple strong leadership can be. Im also struck by how so many phrases from this speech can be amended slightly and used in our own organisations, indeed our own society, as we stand up for Life and Liberty. As you listen to this speech, replace the the word ‘army’ with the name of your own group/ organisation (or our society!) and see what insights you glean from it... “Every one of us is responsible for the culture and reputation of (organisation name) and the environment in which we work.” “If you become aware of any individual degrading another, then show moral courage and take a stand against it. No one has ever explained to me how the exploitation or degradation of others enhances capability or honours the tradition of (organisation name).” “I will be ruthless in ridding (organisation name) of people who cannot live up to its values and I need every one of you to support me in achieving this.” “The standard you walk past is the standard you accept. That goes for all of us but especially those who… have a leadership role.” That last quoted line always gives me goosebumps. What behaviours are we, as a society, currently walking past, that denigrate us as humans? It is time for clear thinking of the standards we accept, and what we do not - and will not - accept. In thankfulness to those who have fought for us to have another weekend of Life and Liberty :) https://youtube/watch?v=QaqpoeVgr8U
