This story aired last night. Dr. Thomas (in my group of Ob/Gyns), points out how our cesarean rate as a group has dropped since we have instituted our policy, as a group, to avoid elective inductions of labor for our patients (except in special circumstances, like the father leaving the country, a very ill family member, etc). Elective inductions are done just for scheduling convenience, which is different from inductions we do for health reasons like high blood pressure or diabetes. It is important to know that many OBs encourage elective inductions for their patients so they can more easily be present for the delivery. It is of course more fun for mom and doc to be assured to be together for the big moment, but it doesnt come without potential risks and consequences. Also, its important for moms to know that sometimes the factor of reimbursement comes into play for the OB (many docs are paid for the delivery only if present; if another doc delivers, then he or she gets paid instead), so always consider this possibility when making your decisions.
