This story is eight years old. This weekends assassination of two police officers brings up the memory even as I was forgetting this guy. I used to work six feet away from murderer Dave Garvin. Even bought him drinks a couple of times. He was trying to develop, with obvious frustration, appropriate styling for Wall Street Journal graphics. I was managing the Barrons installation. I was (am?) quick-witted and uninhibited. Sometimes Dave laughed at my remarks. But, yes, I sometimes noticed the red rage he had for others. I nonchalantly typified him as yet another human struggling to reconcile the lizard and ape brains. But something he said one day stays with me, probably because of the emphasis he put on the you part: Whipple, youre OK. I have no doubt he believed more people than auxiliary officers and pizza makers had wronged him.
