This story is not in Cades Cove but back in the day bears from the Smokey Mountains were released into the area were my dad kept his honey bees, So when they talked about relocating a bear back then it was removed from the smoky mountains and taken 10 to 16 hour trip to cost of NC and released into some 30 million acres of woodlands. Here is one of several Mr. Bear Storys I thought you might like to read about. I gave this bear to my dad a few years back and its been his favorite gift I ever gave him.... So this last week I took Mr. Bear to Cades Cove and shot some photos of him, hoping to catch just the right scene to make a photo for him this photo is one of several taken in the cove. I had to move away from the crowd as even Mr. Bear created a traffic bear jam. Here is the story now. My Bees Mr. Bear By Darwin D White on Friday, September 12, 2014 at 11:33pm This is one of my favorite storys its told to me by my dad many times Many times late at night I would stand at the entrance of a bee hive with a smoker in one hand and a flash light in another (off but ready if I needed it) My job was to smoke the bees with smoke to keep them calm. This particular night was my night off dad was kind enough to leave me at home because we had been moving bees for several nights in a row and I needed the sleep. I am guessing I was 13 or 14 at the time. So I stayed home and the next day this is the story I heard! And of all the nights for me to stay home! My dad had found a great place to put his bees, but it was across a canal of water deep into the forest land of Eastern NC. We had cleared out a place for a bee yard and my dad had hand carried each hive across the canal on a foot bridge made by a couple of a pine tree that someone had laid down and sliced the top flat not much room when your hand carrying a 50 to 100 lb hive of bees. This particular night the moon was bright and dad could easily see the white super’s of the hives of bees. Dad arrived and walked across the foot bridge to survey the yard and standing right there in the yard was a large black bear! ~ Now seeing a bear at night is quite scary in my opinion, but my dad had a job to do and he never backed down from anything. This bear had knocked over a hive of bees and was enjoying the bee larvae when dad arrived. Dad yelled at the bear and the bear took off. Dad stacked the hive back together and carried it to the truck, mad angry bees and all ~ Dad could take a bee sting like nobody I have ever known. Dad returned to the bee yard to find that bear in the back of the bee yard knocking over yet another hive of bees, shewing the bear away he again stacked the hive of bees and carried a hive to the truck, this time he decides to bring his ax back to the bee yard, over the foot bridge through the brush and wouldnt you know it the bear was back again. Dad takes off running after the bear swinging his ax and the bear again runs away, dad throws the ax at the bear! So again he picks up the hive and carries ti away to the truck, and returns. This time the bear is walking around the yard, pacing and dad is like starting to finally get nervous, chasing a bear away from your bee hive was one thing but watching a bear pace back and forth making little snorts was an entirely different thing.. Dad yell at the bear .MY BEES MR BEAR GO AWAY The bear moves back into the shadows of the moon lit night and dad carrys another hive across the canal and back to the truck. When he returns and each time he returns till all the bees are out of the woods the bear continued to pace, growling a few times and dad continues to talk to the bear, MY BEES MR. BEAR GO AWAY and Mr. Bear would snort and growl and pace back and forth. Later after telling the story a few times, dad begins to realize just how that night could have turned out differently, but he got his bees out of the woods and safely moved to a new location for a new crop of honey. But dad has often remembered that night and believes that God must have protected him. In addition remember the smoker I told you about? Its possible that the bear could have been afraid to come back into the bee yard once the smoker got lit and smoke began to fill the air. But there for a while, dad was unsure who was going to win out, the bear or the bee keeper ~ MY BEES MR BEAR! is a story still told around the white house whenever there the ole bee keeper who just turned 77 years of age. .
