This story is tragic and senseless. A man from Baltimore shot his girlfriend, made some anti-police rantings on Instagram, then drove to New York and shot two police officers, and finally shot himself in the head on a subway platform. His ostensible motive may have been revenge for the killing of Eric Garner, but at first glance, this appears to be more like a desperate and deranged person attempting suicide-by-cop. Our sympathies should of course be with the families of the victims, but for the rest of society and the police force, it is some consolation to know that these tragedies are very rare -- it is the first fatal shooting of an NYPD officer in more than three years.
