This story made me tear up ~ Pastor Tony Campolo tells a story about being in a church in Oregon where he was asked to pray for a man who was in the late stages of cancer. Campolo laid his hands on the man and prayed boldly for healing. The next week, Campolo got a telephone call from the man’s wife. “Do you remember me?” the woman asked. “You prayed for my husband last week. He had cancer.” When Campolo heard the word “had”, he thought the man’s cancer had been eradicated— but before he could respond, the wife continued, “Yesterday my husband died.” Campolo felt terrible; he felt that his prayers had failed. However, the words of the newly widowed woman soon proved him wrong: “It was a miracle. When he came into that church that Sunday, he was filled with anger. He knew he was going to be dead in a short period of time, and he hated God for doing this awful thing to him. He was only 58 years old and he wanted to see his children and grandchildren grow up. He was bitter that this all-powerful God had afflicted him; he would lie in bed and curse God. The more his anger grew towards God, the more miserable he was to everybody around him, too. It was an awful thing to be in his presence. “But after you prayed for him, something changed. A peace came over him; joy filled his sick body. The last three days of our life together were the best days of our relationship. We sang, we laughed, we read Scripture, we held hands, and we prayed together. Tony, they were wonderful days filled with God’s love and presence. And I called to thank you for laying your hands on him and praying for healing.” And then the woman said something incredibly profound. She said, “Tony, your prayers were answered. He wasn’t cured, but he was healed.”
