This stuff has been going on under the KHSAAs noses for year. Rarely is there a peep from this bunch, which has been paid -- lavishly-- since 1917 by Kentucky school districts and taxpayers to keep sports the states secondary schools honest. It has, instead, become an ol boys club for superintendents, school board members and its Board of Control, which rarely does anything to control illegal recruiting, especially when one of their schools is involved. State championships have been won with players who suddenly moved in from Texas or West Virginia or Fleming-Neon without a word from the KHSAA, but then this guy from Floyd County opens up a pipeline of sorts in Kentucky for black kids from Canada and even New York to several Eastern Kentucky schools, but who gets slammed? -- a small. historical little school on Lotts Creek which has bravely struggled to keep itself alive for nearly a century without much help from the state and with absolutely no clout in Lexington. Other players transferred from Canada to other schools in Pikeville and Knott County, but theyre not mentioned in this long, unprecedented report. And if its not legal for Cordia, it shouldnt be legal for ANYBODY else. The KHSAA is, and has been, a leaky boat for years -- more interested in selling corporate sponsorships to high school tournaments, it sometimes seems, than doing its job. When is the last time a legitimate newspaper looked at the salaries KHSAA officials siphon off public school tournaments for themselves? Former Superintendent of Public Instruction Alice McDonald wanted to abolish the KHSAA and turn its duties back over to the state Department of Education. McDonald had her faults, but she was right about this. The current state school board should consider it again. Theres plenty of dead wood already on the state payroll in KDE capable of running our schools sports programs better, and more fairly, than they are now. Such a measure would save our struggling Kentucky school districts a lot of money and take much of the ol boy politics out of school sports in this state. Finally. Comments by: Lee Mueller
