This sure took me back to my childhood days in Miami. Most people - TopicsExpress

This sure took me back to my childhood days in Miami. Most people would use the pointy knife or screwdriver method in the 3 holes of the coconuts monkey face. (BTW, Im really surprised that, in all the videos Ive yet seen online, where the mouth hole is punctured to get at the milk, nobody seems to know to puncture at least one of the eye holes to let the water pour out faster! Simple physics, right?!) Anyway, being only 9 or so yrs old, my folks thought the chance of my hurting myself with those tools was too great. So, I was taught this videos slightly safer method, which I liked better anyway, because less shell debris got into the milk. Id put the coconut on the grass and hit it between those 3 lines until I could pry the triangular cap off, use a plain table knife to cut through the nut meat, pour the juice into a glass, (we didnt usually have straws,) and kept whacking at the shell, which would pretty much dislodge all the coconut meat, as in this video. I had totally forgotten about this technique! I love sweet memory jogs like this!!! I wonder, how many remember opening coconuts as kids growing up in South Florida? I also vividly recall how the family with 5 boys next door had a machete that even the sons as young as me were allowed to wield unsupervised, (honest!) often for the distinct purpose of cutting through the husk of coconuts fresh off the tree. They would sometimes give me a started one, and I learned how to use the hammers claw to pull off the husk sections to get at the nut inside. What a LONG process!! But that was real fun in those days. ;-) I never told my parents about the time they taught me how to swing the machete at a fresh coconut, letting me have a go at it, even. Lucky I didnt hack my leg off!! I also never told them about the time I figured a block of wood could work as good a hammer for driving headless nails, and drove one clean through my right hand. Its faded, but the scar is faintly still there, and I smile and wince simultaneously every time I notice that tiny badge of daring-do. Sigh... those were some kind of days! And then, there was that BB-gun incident ... well, maybe another time. https://youtube/watch?v=DdWlarwpggs
