This time around, the debate on Higher Education in the Parliament - TopicsExpress

This time around, the debate on Higher Education in the Parliament is crucial. All that has been taking place in Delhi University in the last few years is the outcome of social and political indifference towards the importance of Higher Education. The tacit understanding that universities are important only in so far as they equip students to bag good (well-paying) jobs has led to a lack of attention towards intellectual pursuits, liberalism of ideas and most importantly, democracy. An autocratic VC like Dinesh Singh was waiting to happen. However, it seems that the Parliament has finally woken up. CPIM comrade Ritabrata Banerjee has made an eloquent plea for a reorientation of policy in Higher Education. In doing so, he taken the DU VC to task. Credit, here is of course due to the thousands of students and tecahers of Delhi University who have fought, with their backs to the wall, against indifference and cynicism; who have brought back issues of Equity, Access and Social Justice to the forefront in the debate on Higher Education.
