This time last year I was about to start my crawl through the Cu Chi tunnels in Vietnam with a cold chisel classic running on repeat in my minnd:) I finished the day by listening to a live stream of the Hottest 100 in a café with fellow Aussies in Ho Chi Minh. That same night I boarded the plane to head home and though it was raining and flooding in Brisbane it felt good to be back. I love exploring different places in the world but also am very aware through encountering various situations of poverty and hardship in other places how lucky we are to live beneath cobalt blue skies, the golden beach at our doorstep, the land of freedom and the land of opportunity. The Aboriginal people were true custodians of the land and realized the importance of preserving the environment and living in peace and harmony with the land and each other. We have much to learn from them. Natural treasures like the Great Barrier Reef are not ours alone and we bear responsibility to look after them for future generations. Our great Southern Land is a veritable mix of culture and all those who have come here from a myriad of places colour and strengthen our countries identity. Let us be a country that always extends the hand of friendship and of welcome. Let us when we travel to distant places flash the well known Aussie smile and show our unique sense of humour, lust for life and fearless spirit. Let us celebrate today the beauty and majesty of this special place we call home and the connection we have with all people who have been fortune favoured to live here, to spend time here and to experience first hand this Great Southern treasure. Have a fantastic day!
