This time of year can be really depressing for many people...I am no expert on suicide at all but anyone who plans to minister to/help anyone suffering from suicidal thoughts should know... 1. Telling them that its the weak way out is not going to help. They already feel helpless and bad about themselves...so disappointing them into deliverance is not smart nor is it helpful. 2. You will always speak of hope and not losing hope BUT give them something to put their hope in...of course Jesus...offer Jesus...offer His love...NOT the fear of hell. Also give practical ways of experiencing victory. Like easy tasks they can complete. Experiencing victory widens your capacity for hope. 3. Realize that not committing suicide or not being successful in a suicide attempt still forces the person to live the very life they wanted to escape. It leaves you with an overwhelming sense of what if after every disappointment. It makes you question EVERYTHING. So in crisis...one of the initial thoughts will always be I have to get out of here 4. Give them a safe place, counsel and consistency. They need that. 5. Dont get mad if they struggle with the thought again. It doesnt discount that God can deliver nor does it make them wrong...it reminds you that they are human and are influenced by circumstance. Welp...thats all I have....just know that it is imperative ESPECIALLY this time of year to hug everyone a little tighter and spend an extra 10 seconds to send an I love you text.
