This time of year may be a time for celebrating and and be filled with love and laughter but for many; this time of year brings out other feelings. Feelings like sadness, anxiety, withdrawing from others and wanting to be alone. This may be a form of depression known as SADS. (seasonal affective disorder) There are ways to beat the blues, so to speak. 1. Increase your vitamin D. (2000iu - 5000iu) Many of us just are not getting enough sunlight in these cold months. Living in a city doesnt help much either. 2. Exercise regularly. It helps to release endorphins that create serotonin ( the happy hormone) as well as it helps to alleviate stress and anxiety, reduce pain. aim for at least 20 min daily 3. Increase your omega 3s. This helps to relieve depression symptoms as well as help to maintain a healthy level of dopamine and serotonin in the brain. One other plus is it helps to keep the joints lubricated and reduce inflammation. 4. Choose your foods wisely, avoid fried, processed or sugary foods. Make sure to choose bright coloured fruits and veggies, as well as incorporating protein at every meal. Remember you are not ALONE, and you will get through this!
