This tree creates a great shelter, makes a productive hedge, is a brilliant pioneer plant as it is nitrogen fixing and produces an abundance of leaf fall which provides a beautiful soil conditioner, it is very fast growing at over a meter a year but is short lived and shades its self out or can be shaded out by canopy trees, so it is the perfect woodland starter and will remain on the woodland edge or in a glade or a maintained hedge as a very productive worthwhile crop. Also great for the birds as they love the fruit but as a heavy cropper there is plenty for everyone. The fruit is medicinal and has been used in the prevention and reversal of some cancers. In some countries the fruit juice has been used as an elixir if life. A very hard wood it has been used for sewing needles and bearings.
