This tree, which is just down the street from my home, is extremely rare. In fact, there are only ten specimens of redwood chimera known to exist. Its a redwood tree that contains both normal tissue and albino tissue. This particular tree is about fifty years old and over fifty feet tall -- by far the tallest redwood chimera It was slated to be chopped down because its growing too close to the tracks of a commuter rail system now being installed by Sonoma Marin Area Rail Transit (SMART). Just days ago, however, it was announced that the healthy tree would be saved, its root ball dug up and relocated to a safer location along the SMART right-of-way.
