This video highlights the dangers that people (including gay people) face when they dont present (either intentionally or unintentionally) their gender identity in a way that conforms to societal norms. It also raises an interesting question as to why some straight men are so threatened by male gender non-conformity. (I think the very last part of the video showing the man who oscillates between threatening the kid and trying to get him to go home with him may provide a clue.) I have to say that the way the kid holds a bag in this video makes even me uncomfortable, but that speaks both to how attuned I am to the danger this kid is facing, and my own (diminishing) discomfort over these issues from my early years of wanting people to think that most gay guys arent effeminate (which I now realize revealed a lot of my own internalized homophobia). It also shows the glaring truth that we, the Gay community, have a lot more aligned interests with the Trans community than most gay people want to admit. This video made me write another check, not to HRC, but to the NCTE.
