This video is a little long, but definitely worth watching all the way to the end! Theres one part where it talks about medical rationing and the liberal defense that medical rationing wont happen under the Affordable Care Act aka Obamacare. It has to happen. Theres no possible way NOT to ration. The way theyll ration without calling it rationing is by establishing the reimbursement to doctors at rate in which the doctor wont make money by performing the operation. In the 1990s, doctors got around $5,000 for every knee or hip replacement. Today, they make a little over $1,000 for every knee or hip replacement. That price includes ALL pre- and post- operative visits within 3 months. Under Obamacare, the reimbursement is said to be around $500! What doctor is going to do these anymore at that price? (See below for a link youll find interesting.) As a side note, what other profession (besides that of a physician) has had their pay cut that significantly since the 1990s? Im sure there are some, but not many. Yet, people are still complaining that doctors make too much. Decrease pay by much more, and our incoming physicians definitely wont be the best of the best... and who wants that type of doctor performing brain or heart surgery or anything else for that matter? Just sayin. Anyway, People who have received joint replacement can attest that their quality of life significantly improved after recovering from the surgery. Did the procedure necessarily save their lives - no. Did it allow them to do more with their lives - YES! This surgery will be rationed significantly. My guess is it will become a cash-pay surgery that only the wealthy will be able to afford. Just another reason why this law will only hurt the poor and middle class. See this short article on the discrepancy between what patients think their doctors are getting and what the doc actually receives: freakonomics/2012/06/06/what-surgeons-get-paid-and-what-patients-think-surgeons-get-paid/.
