This video, recorded by research intern Shawna, is a late-morning loggerhead sea turtle hatchling emerging from nest 11, laid by Dos Equis this summer on Jekyll Island. Since these turtles are only a few inches long, they can become entrapped in holes and other structures on the beach while they are crawling to sea. You can help these little sea turtle hatchlings out a HOLE lot by sharing this video with all of your beach-going friends along the Atlantic coast and reminding them to fill in any deep holes in the sand. Newborn sea turtles emerge from their nests between July and October each year. Happy hatchling season!
