This video shows overt racism, which in most cases isn’t the current that moves a country to larger more insidious racist, laws, undercurrents and accepted racism. It’s also misleading that Canadians on a whole dislike racism. This is a “feel good racism”. So I call BS, it has little to no meaning. Before the media or public knew who or what the Ottawa attack (not “attacks”, that were being reported) was about, witnesses said he looked “Muslim”, “Islamic”, “dark”, “wearing an Arab scarf”. This is the undercurrent that allows countries to engage in larger more insidious racism. This instant, has been racialized, to promote fear mongering and hate crimes. One day after the attack Stephen Harper said the following. - “In recent weeks I’ve been saying that our laws and police powers need to be strengthened in the area of surveillance, attention and arrest. They need to be much strengthened and I assure members that work which is already under way will be expedited…” – “For now, make no mistake, even as the brave men and women of our Armed Forces are taking this fight to the terrorists on their own territory, we are equally resolved to fight it here.” - “We are taking a clear stand against those who are committing atrocities against innocent civilians,” - “We are also discussing how this action works in tandem with our efforts here in Canada under the Counterterrorism Strategy to address terrorist threats and to prevent Canadians from travelling to the Middle East, joining ISIL and other terrorist groups.” All this allows us to pass covert legislation, to a non-existent danger, to promote killing of families and children overseas. This narrative IS racist, and there should be more talk about this “covert racism” and less talk about “feel good racism”. https://youtube/watch?v=p9rFprD_Qf4
