This was a response I wrote in relation to the post regarding Bandit, the missing Husky found deceased. The Missing Dog post was taken down, rightfully so. Admin...feel free to remove of course but I had already written it. RIP, Bandit. I will probably regret posting this & not wanting to start up a debate but in the face of death, a light should always be spread so here is the light I would like to shed on this: There are 4 million dogs killed every year...at least that is the data we can collect. Every home my not be a home that YOU would want your dog to live in. There will always be a worse home & a better home than what even you provide. A good home is a subjective opinion. I personally think over feeding a dog & treating it like a human baby can be abuse...but that is just a sample of an opinion that may differ from someone elses. Also, because someone does not have a fence does not mean they should not have a dog; they just need to modify their lives accordingly, just like someone living in an apartment. A dog should not be tied out as a primary means of confinement though. There are dogs that really do love to be outdoors. There are dogs that have never lived indoors. Saying the tie out was frozen open does sound sad, so I understand the knee-jerk reactionary responses. I have seen dogs that live outdoors that have a better setup than some dogs that live indoors; heated barns, animals to hang out with, lots of enrichment, farmers that work the fields with the dogs next to them. Lets please try not to blanket judge the life of another person & their dog. Its posts such as these, filled with judgement that are such a turn off to people just on the outskirts of animal rescue & its posts like these that make those people think people in animal welfare are nuts. Choosing words wisely, with less judgement, offering help & education might actually help us form an alliance & help people that might go & buy animals because they dont want to deal with crazy animal rescuers come adopt instead.
