This was actually yesterdays meditation by our beloved Anne Russell. Monday March 17 Luke 6:21b Love your enemies Luke 6:31 Do to others as you would have them do to you Today we celebrate St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland. He is one of Christianity’s most known figures but for all his notoriety his life remains somewhat of a mystery. He was a Roman citizen, kidnapped at age 16, escaped after six years and returned to his native Britain. God later called him to return to Ireland. He prepared for the task eventually being ordained priest and bishop, virtually the first missionary bishop in history. Patrick is reputed to have been the first human to speak out unequivocally against slavery. The challenge to “Love your enemies” remains as great today as it was in Patrick’s day. A modern-day saying is: “We have met the enemy and they are us”. In this case, the enemy was me. There was a time when my marriage was in serious trouble. I ws hurting, so I was looking for someone to blame. It was quite a revelation to me when I began to comprehend that I was mutually responsible. Verse 37 reads: do not judge, and you will not be judged and do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. I finally realized that I could be forgiven if I let go of my attitudes of judging and condemning-----a big change! The marriage ended and with God’s help I was able to forgive and pray for healing for all the family members involved.
