This was my first Christmas away from the home of my grandparents. Today I got into my office to discover a box full of goodies and one of the same old stockings weve been using since before I was born. Vegan protein powder, seitan jerky, hemp seeds, natural tooth paste, coconut water, a Peace begins on your plate pin, reusable grocery bag with an avocado on it that says Im good fat, etc. As Ive grown older Ive learned my relationship with my grandparents is different than most peoples. My grandparents taught me how to use the internet when I was a kid, I used to house sit for them because in their 60s they got really into going to India, Greece, Italy, the pro bowl in Hawaii, Blues Festivals in Mississippi, drive to California for some conventions, etc. When I was 17 we worked on the Howard Dean campaign together because we were all so sick of war and had hope for socialized medicine, and they told me if the draft came back theyd pay for me to go to Canada, even in their mid 70s weve hung out playing pinball at punk rock bars after midnight. Grandma digs up vegan recipes for me on pintrest, grandpa loves talking with equal enthusiasm about the importance of labor unions and the Detroit Lions. NPR and Farmers Markets are a way of life for all of us, and as I get older I find myself becoming more and more like them and Im totally fine with that.
