This was on a FaceBook friends newsfeed tonight. I couldnt help but share....I wont make a comment about it, but I will share. You probably know why..... i realize that as a veteran coachs wife im just supposed to smile, be friendly with everyone and support the school & team like no other. i realize im not really supposed to hear all the things said at games or the nasty remarks made about my husband and his colleagues and i realize that im supposed to rise above it all and maintain thick skin and let it all roll off my back. but, im a human being...as is my husband and our children....and we have real thoughts, feelings & emotions. not once in my lifetime have i ever showed up at a friends/acquaintances job and criticized them and their performance. never have i had the audacity to question their work performance. ive never insisted that they explain how they plan to do their job better. i wouldnt dream of speaking as if i knew anything about their job or how to do it. i certainly wouldnt begin to form my mouth to speak in a self-righteous tone that says my respect for you is diminishing because i dont think youre handling xyz situation in the way i would. that said, i have never understood why people feel completely at ease showing up to a football game, practice or film review and questioning the coach(es) on their performance. why they have the nerve to speak to the coaches as if they actually know something about coaching. these coaches have even been reminded that only 13% of their paycheck is for coaching - the other 87% is for teaching. they are expected to give their full efforts to the classroom but the minute something on the field goes wrong or doesnt look right or a parent complains about losses, that 13% suddenly carries a lot of weight and can even cost them 100% of their job. during the season, high school football coaches spend, on average, an ADDITIONAL 40 hours a week coaching - practices, games, scouting, film review, game planning, etc. - that doesnt even include off-season, spring ball, weekends spent at continuing ed football clinics (many are un-compensated), college camps, THSCA coaching school, summer workouts and more. AND these coaches teach core classes of ap english, ap world history, variety of math classes, etc - these arent your old school PE teachers - so they must perform all the duties of a regular classroom teacher (by the way, some of these teachers are also team leads in their department as well) these coaches are PROFESSIONALS. the people in the stands, at home listening on the radio or the parents who show up to practice or film review are NOT professional coaches. they are attorneys, secretarys, teachers, accountants, counselors, engineers, home builders, and so on, and i would NEVER EVER dream of telling them how to do their job. i would NEVER EVER dream of speaking to them in a condescending tone indicating they somehow dont know what they are doing or that they somehow owed me an explanation of how they will improve. rant ended. i think. well, one last thing...stick to what you know. the world requires all of us to make it go round. go be a champion in your arena. let these coaches do their thing. this is NOT their hobby...this is their career. EDITED TO ADD: while were on the subject...when youre spending your Saturday complaining about how busy you are traveling to & from your kids activities or posting fun pics on FB showing you living it up at your favorite college football game, the coaches are at work. Watching film over & over. Trying to figure out how to get 11 high school boys to make the right play or implement what theyve been trying to teach all season. And on Sunday, when youre enjoying family time, guess what these coaches are doing?? Yep, working. Trying to figure out the best way to get your boy to execute on the field. See, these are kids. The coaches could work 70 hours a week but if those boys dont do what theyve been taught then none of it matters.
