This was one of my most interesting and difficult Whitby related commissions. What can be more daunting than to be asked to do a portrait of an artist. This is one of several preliminary pencil and charcoal sketches which were executed to feel comfortable enough to render the work in ink, a medium not very forgiving when critical errors are made. I know the Whitby subject (many of you will know him) will not mind my posting this, it would probably put a smile on his face if he used a computer which he doesnt. He is one of my oldest Whitby friends. Later I will post a copy of the finished ink version the original of which is in his families possession.
