This was one of the responses written about the today show online glasses segment! Here is a very good response about the use of online eyeglasses: Of course the black heels sold at Payless Shoes are the same design and quality as a pair of Christian Louboutin or Giuseppe Zanotti shoes, just for less money. Oh, yes, an entry level Kia is every bit as good a car as a Mercedes or Lexus, only less money. And of course, who can tell the difference in a steak from Denny’s is just as juicy and delicious as a steak from Del Friscos or a Mortons. Any one of us could go on and on making the same examples. When are we going to learn that most of the time, we get what we pay for? There is an expertise in design, materials and craftsmanship that goes into most higher end products that cheap knockoffs will never possess. I have seen a number of stories on TV claiming that cheap eyeglasses are every bit as good as those sold in most end optical stores. That simply isn’t true. That is the same as calling any pair of high heels the same, any automobile the same, or any steak dinner the same. How many of us would shop for a heart surgeon the way the Today show and others portray buying eyeglasses? Surgery is surgery right? Let anyone who creates a website just open you up...its all about saving money, right? Can you purchase a cheap pair of eyeglasss that you can see out of? Absolutely. However, a pair of eyeglasses ordered online will never fit as well, or be as optically accurate to your prescription and your eyes as when they are custom fit by well trained and in some states, licensed opticians. The big online optical retailers sell cheaper frames and cheaper lenses. They are not selling quality materials and when it comes to lenses are most often selling 30 year old technology. The markup on the major online optical shops sites are often even higher than your local optical store, they are just making the product from the cheapest materials available. There is no question the glasses you buy from a reputable local optical store will let you see better and will last longer than the products sold by most online optical sites. Money is money, I get it. I like to save where I can too. However, let’s stop pretending that a pair of $99 eyeglasses is the same as a pair of $300 eyeglasses….and that a pair of $29 shoes is as well made as a $400+ pair of shoes. You get what you pay for.
