This was posted up by Robert Muchamore on a thread below, In the interests of open discussion etc..anyone care to comment??? START Poor getting poorer? Were in a globalised economy, which is unfortunate for unskilled or semi-skilled workers in countries like the UK who compete for jobs with countries with much lower wages. However, the global picture is radically different. Back in September the UN reported that malnutrition in developing countries has dropped from 25% to 12% since 1990. There is a real prospect that the 806 million malnourished people in the world will halve in the next 10-15 years. Rapid economic growth in India and China has pushed hundreds of millions of people above the poverty line. And while a few simple souls who cant see beyond their own garden fence prattle on about corrupt bankers and the super rich, the global economy is seeing vast capital flows from rich countries with huge trade defecits to poor ones like China and India where most poor people actually live. The Chinese have even begun investing in Africa, and many African countries are showing real economic growth for the first time since the 1970s. In short, were living through the greatest redistribution of wealth from rich to poor in global history. Im as uncomfortable as anyone else with some of the things that happen on the cutting edge of capitalisim, but I can live with that while it remains the only method that consistently brings millions of people out of poverty in the real world.
