This was really outstanding. Outside of the dispelling the myths about Washington, the workings of the first govt are fascinating. By his 2nd term, Washington took as much abuse or more than any present day politician with pretty much every aspersion you can think of thrown at him. Madison was a back-stabbing two-faced asshole, publishing anti-Washington articles while acting as his speechwriter. Mostly, for me, was the complex portrait of a slaveholder who didnt really care for the institution but since it was the way things were done, held slaves. Ive never seen cultural blindness explained so well within the context of the time.
