This was the STRAs first moto national to ever host. Lane Leavitt, Marland Whaley and Bernie Schreiber came into this final round of the series with serious pressure...whoever won this event would win the 78 National Championship. Interesting facts: -60 riders from 23 states (including Alaska competed) -This national won the best national of the year voted on by the riders -17 sections, 3 laps and a 14.5 mile loop in 6.5 hours (1 addl hour but penalized per minute late) in 90+ degree heat -5 sections were champ line only, the other 12 had the champ and support classes riding the exact same line! -On the 12 sections where everyone rode the same line, Marland Whaley had the lowest score. On the 5 champ only sections, Bernie had the lower score and ended up winning the event. -NOTE...Bernie had one won two world events earlier that year and spent much time training with Vesterinen. He had bike problems at this national in Alabama because he had not changed to a proper spark plug for the warm weather...had run a hotter plug while training in Finland. You will also see other great riders in the video including Debbie Evans Leavitt. (Due to her schedule she had to literally finish the last section and be taken to the airport...arrangements were made and a city official took her quickly to the airpot in full riding gear so she could make the flight...which she did) Please leave comments if you have more info on the event, tag others and feel free to share the video vimeo/116566318
