This week, Campus Film Classics presents the 1978 martial-arts classic The 36th Chamber of Shaolin. Hong Kong action filmmaker Liu Chia-Liang (Drunken Master II) tells the fictionalized account of San Te (played by Gordon Liu of Kill Bill Vols. 1 & 2 fame), a Shaolin disciple and folk hero who became synonymous with teaching kung fu to everyday people during the Manchu Dynasty. The film focuses on San Tes grueling martial arts training in the Shaolin Temple, and how he used the skills acquired there to save his hometown from the fearsome oppression of the Manchu government. Widely regarded as one of the greatest martial-arts movies ever made, The 36th Chamber of Shaolin will be screened this Thursday (November 20th) at 7 pm. As always, the screening is free and open to the public.
