This week I had the opportunity to spend the day with a group of Kinship Carers in Warrnambool, all of whom were grandmothers and looking after up to 5 children. They were a wonderful, strong and insightful group of women who had made enormous sacrifices to care for their grandchildren, many of whom were having difficulties at home and school. There was laughter and tears throughout the day of training, and wonderful heartfelt stories that demonstrated the carers commitment to their children. As I drove back to Melbourne it struck me how our society celebrates celebrities and looks up to businessmen making a lot of money, generally keeping most for themselves. Meanwhile, the tens of thousands of men and women throughout Australia who make great sacrifices - such as Kinship Carers - are hardly known to us, yet they make such an enormous contribution to the wellbeing of some of the most vulnerable children in our country. I think society may need to think about where our priorities should be focused...To all Kinship Carers throughout Australia, on behalf of all Australians, I say THANK YOU and THANK YOU AGAIN - Gregory and the ACT Group Team
