This week, I was voted to be chairman of the subcommittee of the Citizens Law Enforcement Review Board, which will decide on what legislative changes to recommend for the Citizens Law Enforcement Review Board to the Memphis City Council. While I am only one vote on that subcommittee, I will urge my colleagues to support giving teeth to the Citizens Law Enforcement Review Board, and I will also urge them to recommend that the City of Memphis install cameras on all on-duty police officers. The big question will be, whether or not the Memphis City Council adopts our recommendations. I will be watching closely, and I will not remain silent if our recommendations are ignored. People always ask, Who will police the police?. My answer: the public, and these cameras would give much more detailed records to, not only the Citizens Law Enforcement Review Board, but also to the Shelby County District Attorneys office, Internal Affairs for the Memphis Police Department, and the Memphis City Attorneys office, who frequently deal with lawsuits against the city over such matters. Also, dont forget, that these cameras protect police officers just as much as anyone else. Plenty of fraudulent claims are placed against the police, and these cameras would prevent a lot of that from being possible.
