This week NACo is releasing a new publication on the Payment in Lieu of Taxes (PILT) program. The presentation was developed in an effort to continue educating policymakers, county officials and the public about the unique nature of PILT, its history, and why PILT funding matters to over 1,850 counties in 49 states, including California. PILT provides payments to counties and other local governments to offset losses in tax revenues due to the presence of tax-exempt federal land in their jurisdictions.
