This week, a few individuals from the Bible Christian Church in Rapid City have been outside the Douglas High School in the afternoons with megaphones making comments to students as they leave. The district has issued these individuals a trespass warning, and they arent allowed on school property anymore. However, yesterday they set up on the property across the street. The district is working with the City of Box Elder and law enforcement to assure the safety of our students and to make sure these individuals do not cross the line and violate the rights of others. However, neither the district nor law enforcement can deny these individuals their constitutional rights. We encourage anyone within earshot NOT to give them the attention they are seeking. Everyone has a right to freedom of speech, even if their language is offensive, and those rights are protected by law. The best thing to do is ignore them and use this as a teachable civics moment with your kids.
