This week anti terrorist units from Belgium, Germany, Spain, Sweden and the Netherlands held a common exercise in the ‘Waddenzee’. This sea lies in between the Dutch mainland and our northern islands. The purpose of this exercise was to release 450 passengers on a ferry which was hijacked by terrorists. The association of the Atlas Group associates central anti-terrorist units of the Police of the European Union countries. It organizes common exercises, workshops and research projects to make it possible for units from different Member States of the Union to provide coordinated support at the request of a country in the event of a serious terrorist threat. This, of course, includes first aid. The unification of standards and procedures at the Union’s level by perfecting tactics and technique of actions improves effectiveness of responding to crisis situations.
