This week begins with another short reading from Mark (2:13-17). Sometimes with Mark, you have to pay attention to what is not said but clearly has to be the case. Like today, Jesus says, Follow Me to Levi, who is sitting in the tax booth & he does. Dont you think given the location that Levi had heard Jesus & heard about Jesus? In other words, this is not his first encounter with Jesus. Likewise, Mark does not outright say it but isnt it obvious that Levi then had a bunch of his friends over in order to throw a sort of banquet in honor of Jesus? What a great thing to do & boy did it make the religious leaders upset. Even now, before the cross, we see the scandal in what Jesus did - He offered hope, forgiveness, eternal life to sinners (of all people)! And now, post cross, the scandal is only greater. So many good people (self-righteous) are offended that some really bad person could possibly get saved & they cant just because they dont believe in Jesus. Well, yes, that is how it works: Sinners saved by grace through faith in Jesus (no more & no less)...
