This week, here is some advice on the difference between a Sprain - TopicsExpress

This week, here is some advice on the difference between a Sprain and a Strain. A Sprain is a stretch and/or a tear of a ligament. Ligaments connect bone to bone and support joints. Symptoms include; Pain, muscle spasm/weakness, swelling, inflammation and cramping. A severe sprain produces excruciating pain and perhaps a ‘pop’ at the joint as the ligaments tear or separate from the bone. A mild sprain stretches the ligament but there is no joint loosening. A Strain is an injury of a muscle and/or tendon. Tendons connect muscle to bone. Symptoms include pain, muscle spasm, swelling, inflammation and cramping. A severe strain is where the muscle or tendon is partially or completely ruptured. A mild strain is where the muscle or tendon is stretched or pulled. Treatment for both injuries include: Ice, compression, elevation and rest. Medical attention may be required. Prevention of these injuries include; stretching (not just before/after exercise), Good diet to nourish the muscles, tendons and ligaments and exercise to build strength and prevent atrophy. Next week, The importance of Stretching.
