This week in Cornell history. Dec. 11, 1868 Only months after Cornell opens, a group of students organize themselves as the Independents to fight the increasing presence of secret societies, a term that referred to fraternities. Zeta Psi, Chi Phi, Kappa Alpha, Alpha Delta Phi, Phi Kappa Psi and Chi Psi had already opened chapters on campus, allegedly creating social distinctions among students. The anti-fraternity movement led to the founding of Delta Upsilon as a non-secret fraternity.
