This week in Oct. 1958 the #1 song in the nation was written by a former Vice President of the United States. Charles Dawes (1865-1951) wrote Its All In The Game in 1911, which he originally called Melody In A Major. In 1951, songwriter Carl Sigman added lyrics to Dawes melody, and singer Tommy Edwards took it to #1 on the Billboard charts in late Sept. 1958, where it stayed for 6 weeks. Dawes is an interesting character. He also won the 1925 Nobel Peace Prize for developing the Dawes Plan, an effort that stabilized Germanys post-World War I economy. He was Calvin Coolidges Vice President from Mar. 1925 to Mar. 1929. The two didnt get along very well. There were several reasons, including Dawes rejection of Coolidges invitation to attend the Presidents Cabinet meetings. It was a gesture of inclusiveness that Coolidge was grateful for receiving from President Harding when he was Hardings Veep, and he wanted to extend the same courtesy to Dawes. youtube/watch?v=Gtizr2G_7Bk
