This week, lets begin looking at the factors that determine how well you can learn a second language. Some people seem to learn languages more quickly than others. That is also true for math, chemistry, history or whatever subject. Some people make good progress simply through hard work and persistence. But there are certain factors which will influence how quickly and how well you will learn a second language. These factors can be divided into two types: external factors and internal factors. Internal factors are those that the speaker brings with him/her to the learning process. External factors are things which are determined by the language learning situation. Internal factors include the following: age, personality, motivation, experience, cognition, and mother tongue. External factors include the following: curriculum, instruction, culture & status, motivation, and access to native speakers. Next week, well look at the internal factors in more depth. In the meantime, you can increase your exposure to English vocabulary by doing the exercises in this weeks Study Guide, at englishvocabularyexercises
