This week, lets look at some of the external factors which influence the rate at which we can learn another language, according to an online article entitled The factors that influence the acquisition of a second language. The external factors which influence language learning can be found within the general theme of curriculum. Simply put, language students need support in the learning process through quality instruction with appropriate learning objectives, they need to feel that their own language and culture are respected, they need encouragement in their learning, and they need to use the language in authentic communication with native speakers. Now, lets take a closer look at each of these factors: Just as different people have different abilities in terms of learning a language, equally clear is the fact that some language teachers are better than others. The better the language teacher you have, the more you will learn in your language class. A good teacher teaches you the language you are ready to learn and at a pace that you are able to keep up with. The teacher challenges you and helps you to enjoy the process of learning the language. Another factor which influences the learning process is culture and status. Research suggests that students in situations where their own culture has a lower status than that of the culture in which they are learning the language make slower progress. In the best of all worlds, all languages and all cultures are valued and respected. Everyone benefits from this shared understanding. Next week, well look at the remaining external factors which influence the language learning process. In the meantime, you can continue to work on your language learning through the vocabulary exercises and the Weekly Study Guide at englishvocabularyexercises/ . Happy learning everyone!
