This week my aunt Wanda (dad’s sister and one of nine children) celebrated her 90th birthday. How very special. Wanda is an extraordinary woman… she has outlived all her siblings. She is an incredible storyteller with a perspective and language few could match. Nothing better than listening to her regale with stories of yesteryear… especially of my father Big Max and of his parents and their humble beginnings in Hobart. I am yet to meet anyone who makes lamingtons, match sticks and chocolate eclairs better than my aunt. And I daresay Richie Benaud, the voice and face of the Nine Network cricket coverage for decades would disagree! Richie in the comm box and beige jacket face to face with Wanda armed with a tin of lamingtons and eclairs at Bellerive Oval. It was wet, cricket delayed. Wanda was on a mission to get them to me but unwittingly ended up going into the wrong studio. The ‘silence’ initially would have been golden but soon Richie was taking his first bite.
