This week my home town, Chelsea Oklahoma hosted an annual tradition. Mini Cheer Clinic where little girls 1st through 5th cheer with the Varsity Cheerleaders at Friday nights game. Our oldest daughter Brooke is a Junior on the varsity squad, everyday she picks up her little brother and takes him to her cheer practice with her until daddy or I can pick him up. Tuesday our very shy/introverted 7 year old son Noah was telling his friends about going to cheer practice with his big sister. A bully overheard him and proceeded to him that boys couldnt cheer or do anything like that, only girls do that. Much to my surprise Noah quickly and firmly told the bully You are wrong! There is no such thing as boy stuff and girl stuff! Boys can do anything girls can do! And girls can do anything boys can do! That night after telling me that story, he said Mommy, can I please do cheerleading with the mini clinic? I really want to show that bully that boys CAN cheer, anyone can cheer if they want to, if it makes them happy! Of course our answer was YES, if the coach said it was okay. So we call up the cheer coach and she says yes. Since he had already missed 2 of 3 practices, he and his big sister spent several hours every night practicing. His big night finally arrived, I was afraid hed get scared and decide not to cheer. Boy was I WRONG! LOL! My brave little man stood in the middle of the football field, alone with 50 little girls, and cheered his ass off in front of at least 1000 fans. We are so incredibly proud that at only 7 years old, he had the nerve to stand up for what he believes in and give a big F-U to Bullies and Gender stereotypes! Hes my hero! Im thankful for the realization that, as a mother, Im doing something right and encouraging the next generation of equality fighters!
