This week, our students and teachers have been commemorating the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., through a variety of community-building activities and classroom connections. At Aborn Elementary, music teacher Mrs. Kenney has been working with Mrs. Hennesseys fourth-grade students on a three-part chant that highlights four of the universal human rights that Dr. King demanded for all people: Justice, Equal Rights, Liberty and Freedom. Throughout the chant, one group of students lays the musical foundation for the other two parts by repeating the word brotherhood over and over, which the students have learned to recognize as an example of ostinato (a short melodic phrase repeated throughout a composition). In this way, the chant evokes the solid rock of brotherhood that Dr. King envisioned in his most famous speech, I Have A Dream.
