This week, the Miami Herald/Tampa Bay Times Tallahassee bureau reported that at least three senior executives at Citizens who had overseen multimillion-dollar contracts awarded to private companies later landed jobs at those companies or one of their subsidiaries. If the executives had been typical state employees, they would have been barred by law from taking those positions for at least two years. In response, State Sen. David Simmons, the Altamonte Springs Republican who leads his chambers Banking and Insurance Committee, has ordered his staff to draft legislation that would bar more Citizens employees from jumping ship for jobs with vendors. There is too much temptation to do something thats inappropriate, Simmons told us. There has to be a higher standard. Exactly. State lawmakers should pass Simmons bill at their next opportunity, but that might not come for almost a year.
